Common Conditions Service
The Common Conditions Service allows our pharmacists to assess and treat a range of everyday health conditions without the need to wait for a GP appointment.
At Higgins Pharmacy, our pharmacists are trained to provide expert advice, recommend appropriate treatments, and where suitable, prescribe prescription only medicines under this service. It’s a convenient, accessible way to get the care you need, when you need it.
What conditions can be treated?
The Common Conditions Service covers a number of frequently occurring conditions, including:
- Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women
- Conjunctivitis (eye infections)
- Cold sores
- Impetigo
- Shingles
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Oral thrush
- Vulvovaginal Thrush
Our pharmacists will ask a few questions to confirm that the service is suitable for you and that your symptoms meet the criteria for treatment.
How does the service work?
When you attend the pharmacy, your consultation takes place in a private setting.
Our pharmacist will:
- Assess your symptoms
- Confirm eligibility for the service
- Provide advice and treatment, or refer you to your GP if needed
This ensures you receive safe, appropriate care while avoiding unnecessary delays.
Who can use the service?
The Common Conditions Service is available to eligible patients who meet the clinical criteria set out under the national programme. If the service isn’t suitable, our pharmacists will explain why and advise on the next best step.
No appointment is necessary to access the Common Conditions Service; however, online booking is available if you would prefer to schedule a consultation in advance.
